Each variation develops the conversation, and I think I might view this piece as the structure of a conversation. That is, conversation in general morphs, swells and diminishes, elides and pauses, reiterates and reinforces the same topic. The topic could be anything from dinosaurs to a French Christmas carol. Musically, the conversation ends when all fruitful iterations of the carol are exhausted. Here, we hit the so-called “seven minute wall.”

I can only imagine how this sounded in the openness of the chapel. I bet the organ and the echo, in particular at the 2:45 trill, just flooded the church space with an instantaneous dialogue of sound, both produced and reflected.
